Residents and team members at Ashworth Grange Care Home in Dewsbury unleashed their inner superheroes for a fun-filled day of fancy dress, live entertainment, games and treats in support of Alzheimer’s Society.
The home’s Superhero Day on Friday 28 August brought residents, families and team members together to celebrate the everyday heroes who make a difference to others.
Superhero costumes, music and plenty of treats
Residents enjoyed live entertainment from singer Trevor Woodhead, games and a visit from an ice cream van, while team members embraced the theme by dressing as some of their favourite superheroes.
One of the highlights was the fancy-dress competition, with resident Pauline given the important task of judging the costumes and choosing a winner.
After considering the contenders, Pauline awarded the top prize to carer Samantha ‘Sammy’ Ginnelly for her transformation into Batwoman.
Reflecting on the celebrations, Pauline said: “It’s been a great day.”
Residents could enjoy the celebration in whichever way suited them, whether joining the games and activities, listening to the live music or simply spending time with friends, relatives and team members.
The ice cream van proved particularly popular, while a raffle saw a number of lucky winners take home prizes.
An extra birthday celebration
There was another reason to celebrate as Superhero Day coincided with resident Ken’s birthday.
Team members surprised Ken with a birthday card and plenty of birthday wishes, adding another special moment to the day.
Samantha Ginnelly, Kirstie Hepworth, Dionne Spence, Jade Herron and Faye Smith were among the Ashworth Grange team members who helped bring the celebrations together.
Supporting Alzheimer’s Society
The home raised money for Alzheimer’s Society as part of Bridge Oak Care Homes’ wider Superhero Summer initiative, celebrating the everyday heroes living and working in its homes.
With September marking World Alzheimer’s Month, the event also provided an opportunity to highlight the importance of supporting people living with dementia and their families.
Sharon Troy, Home Manager at Ashworth Grange Care Home, said:
“Superhero Day was a fantastic opportunity for residents, families and team members to come together, have some fun and raise money for Alzheimer’s Society.
“Everyone really embraced the theme, from our team members dressing up to Pauline taking on the very important job of judging our fancy-dress competition. The ice cream van and live entertainment were also a big hit with residents.
“The day was about celebrating the everyday heroes around us, but most importantly it gave residents the opportunity to enjoy themselves, spend time together and make some wonderful new memories.”
